Pre-firing, Dawn adds finishing touches to her pottery at Coddiwomple Studio
The body of work I produce as a functional potter is earthy—generally stoneware, it tends to be rough, imperfect and comforting to hold. I am an illustrator, and the clay surface is a beautiful space on which to draw and color, so my work is often made with intentions of a particular surface decoration. I enjoy the aesthetic and community of a large wood firing, and a small soda firing, so my pots are many colors on brown. I like the look of the earth in my pots—an indentation, a pulled lip, evidence of the hand that made them, and the clay from which they began. I look forward to sitting at the wheel the way I love to stand at my easel, or open my sketchbook to plan a new project: silence from life’s static, and a story begins.
