I have always struggled with focus and it turns out that has been more of a treat than a trick for my artistic journey. I illustrated all my lecture notes in school, illuminated notebooks full of information from workshops, conferences, staff and PTO meetings and any other situation where I was required to listen intently for more than 5 minutes. My hand drew pictures so my brain could FOCUS and process a great deal of information without stepping off to find a shiny object. As a result of constant practice, drawing became a second language and my fluency has evolved continually and consistently. I enjoy the poetry in drawn lines, bold colors and an image that tells a story, so I began my journey in art through illustration. I have played in many disciplines with equal enjoyment. Sculpture, painting, weaving, batik, calligraphy, stained glass, quilting, ceramic tile-making, slip casting, pottery… I wanted to know them all. I suspect this is also an effect of the attention deficit my DNA gifted me. I am grateful. An artist is expected to develop a unified body of work as she matures—to drill in and find her voice—but I seem to have resisted. I poke my fingers into all the shiny stuff, look for magic, and trust my muse to show me how to see it.
